Have you ever thought about your purpose in life? What gets you out of bed and drives you day after day? Maybe it's your career, or your family, or your future goals. I am a 3 on the enneagram: the achiever as they call it, so I am constantly setting goals and trying to reach them. It’s knitted deeply into my being. It is so easy for me to seek out my identity in what I can accomplish. I often have to stop and remind myself of this inevitable truth we all face... one day I will die. One day all the goals I met, money I made, and friends I had won’t matter. Sure, my successes may be beneficial to a few generations down the line, but ultimately in the grand scheme of time and life, they won't matter. Maybe you have felt this way? Maybe you have gone down that long winding trail of thoughts that ultimately lead to this question: isn’t there more?
What If I told you that there is so much more? There is a purpose that has been playing out since the beginning of time and will last for all eternity. You were indeed created to do more than make money, have a family, and then just die. I am a business owner, but my purpose does not lie within my business. I have an amazing boyfriend, but my purpose does not lie within our relationship. I've had a good education and I’m continuing to grow my education, but my purpose does not lie within how much I know. My purpose is greater than myself. It is greater than how many figures are in my bank account. It is greater than whatever name I manage to build for myself.
My purpose is to glorify God with every action, word, and thought I have.
This became my purpose the day I gave my life to Jesus. Maybe you are wondering how glorifying God could be the “so much more” I mentioned earlier.
Let me explain.
God created us and He created us with different passions and abilities, but we all have the same purpose; to bring glory to Him. At the beginning of time God and mankind were in perfect unity. Man used his abilities to glorify God, and God fully satisfied man. Then, God in His love, gave us the ability to choose Him or choose ourselves. Mankind chose to live for their own pleasure and gave into sin. This put a gap between mankind and God because God cannot be in the presence of sin. But, God loved mankind so much that He made a way for us to cross that gap. He didn’t do this because we deserve it; quite opposite actually. He did this simply because He loves us. He sent His son Jesus to the world. Jesus lived a life without sin making Him the only one who could mend the gap between mankind and God. Jesus willingly died on the cross and three days later he rose again overcoming death and sin. Salvation is given when you admit that you are a sinner in need of Jesus, believe that Jesus died on the cross overcoming sin, and repent of those sins by surrendering your life to the will of God.
Once you become a Christian, the Bible says you are a new creation in Christ. It is our job as Christians to share this message with the world. This is our purpose, and God has made each of us with different passions and abilities so we can fulfill this purpose.
Let me give you an example. I am a business owner, I have a business mind, and I’m very creative. God has used my passion for business and my ability to run a business to build His kingdom. Through this business, I have been able to share Jesus with hundreds of girls. My purpose is to glorify God and build His kingdom, and business is just a platform God has given me to do this. My platform may change throughout different seasons of my life, but one thing I am sure of is my purpose remains the same. This gives me confidence and the freedom to trust God, because I know what I’m living for. When God uses my abilities to grow His kingdom it gives me satisfaction, as if it’s what I was created to do, because it is.
God is inviting you into this same purpose. Salvation is a free gift through the death and resurrection of Jesus. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions. I’d love to chat!
